Langar

Every evening from 4 PM to 6 PM, a simple cup of chai becomes a catalyst for change — serving free tea, Affordable homestyle  meals, and a pathway to dignity for women in Zirakpur.

The Legacy of Langar Since 1577

The Legacy of Langar

The concept of Langar has been a cornerstone of Sikh tradition since 1577, when volunteers began donating food, preparing it, and serving it with unwavering enthusiasm to people visiting Gurdwaras — regardless of their religious or cultural background. This selfless act of service has fed millions, breaking barriers and building bridges across communities.

At Community Kitchen in Zirakpur, Punjab, we carry forward this sacred legacy with a modern mission: to bring independence, self-respect, and dignity into the lives of women around the world. Just like the Langars held at Gurudwara’s, we serve meals at low cost — making nutritious, home-cooked food accessible to everyone.

What is Chai Langar?

Chai Langar

Chai Langar is our daily commitment to community and sisterhood. Every evening from 4 PM to 6 PM, we offer free tea to anyone who walks through our doors. But Chai Langar is more than just a cup of chai — it’s three promises in one:

1. Free Tea for All

No questions asked, no barriers to entry. Our Chai Langar is open to everyone — students, workers, families, traveller’s. Because everyone deserves a warm cup of kindness, especially in a world that often feels divided.

2. Homestyle Meals at Affordable Price

Our thali isn’t just affordable — it’s made with the same care, spices, and love that goes into a home-cooked meal. For just ₹110, you get:

  • Freshly prepared sabzi

  • Warm roti or rice

  • Daal, salad, and pickle

  • A meal that feels like home

Because good food shouldn’t be a luxury — it should be accessible to all.

3. Empowered Women Leading the Way

Every cup of chai poured, every thali served, every meal prepared — it’s all done by women. Women who have found dignity, independence, and a voice through Community Kitchen. Women who are no longer just beneficiaries — they are leaders, chefs, and change makers.

How Chai Langar Empowers Women

Over the years, Global Women Power, the NGO that powers Community Kitchen, has worked relentlessly on empowering the lives of women throughout the world. With our Community Kitchen, we bring all our initiatives together to expand and extend our operations for supporting women.

Chai Langar is at the heart of this mission. Here’s how:

Women-Led Service

Our Chai Langar is prepared and served entirely by women — giving them a platform to showcase their culinary skills, earn with dignity, and lead with confidence. These aren’t just jobs — they’re opportunities for women to step into roles they’ve been denied for too long.

Building Sisterhood

Every cup of chai served is a conversation started, a friendship formed, and a network of support strengthened. Women find mentors, friends, and opportunities through these simple daily interactions. The kitchen becomes more than a workplace — it becomes a community.

Breaking Barriers

Just like traditional Langar, Chai Langar welcomes everyone — regardless of caste, creed, religion, or economic status. In our kitchen, every woman is equal, and every voice matters. No discrimination, no judgment — just service and sisterhood.

Sustainable Empowerment

The revenue from our affordable meals (just ₹110 for a complete thali) helps sustain our free Chai Langar and fund further women’s empowerment initiatives — creating a cycle of giving that keeps growing. Every meal you buy helps another woman find her footing.

Why Chai Langar Matters

In a world where women often face barriers to economic independence and social participation, Chai Langar creates a space where:

  • Women can work with dignity and earn a livelihood

  • Communities can come together over a simple cup of tea and a homestyle meal

  • The spirit of Langar lives on — serving all, without discrimination

  • Sisterhood thrives — because when women support women, everyone rises
